Samsung Posted Korea's First ₩100 Trillion Quarter, ₩107.4 Trillion in Q3 Operating Profit — Then Its Stock Fell 5.3% in Seoul's First Session After a Holiday

On Oct 8, 2026, Samsung Electronics published preliminary third-quarter results: operating profit of about ₩107.4 trillion (roughly $80 billion), the first quarter above ₩100 trillion for Samsung or any Korean company, up 782% on a year earlier, on revenue of about ₩195 trillion. The figures are preliminary; the full report with a split by division follows later in October. Korea's market was closed on Friday, Oct 9, for Hangeul Day. On Monday, Oct 12, its first session since, Samsung closed down 5.3% at ₩250,500 and SK Hynix down 5.4% at ₩1,605,000, leaving Samsung about 31% below its record close of ₩362,500 on June 18. Several drivers were on the record at once: while Seoul was shut, the iShares Semiconductor ETF fell 3.4% on Thursday, Oct 8, as OpenAI's annualized revenue was reported below earlier estimates, and another 0.7% on Friday; US Treasury yields and oil prices rose; and China's CXMT said it plans to launch a new DDR5 server memory module by the end of 2026. No single cause explains Monday's fall.
