The EIA's October 2026 Short-Term Energy Outlook reports that overall US electricity consumption in the third quarter of 2026 rose 4% year-over-year, with the commercial sector — which includes data centers — posting the second-fastest growth of any sector, behind only residential's 6%, at 5% year-over-year growth in commercial electricity use
