A new open index that rated all 18,796 O*NET job tasks and weighted them by employment in 146 countries estimates how much work AI agents could take on: in 2026 the share of task time in world employment that is at least partly delegable to AI agents is 35.2%, but only 2.5% can be handed over in full
Cristian Espinal Maya (Universidad Nacional de Colombia) and Santiago Jiménez Londoño (Universidad EAFIT) measured the share of task time in world employment that is at least partly delegable to AI agents in 2026, which is 35.2%, and the share that can be handed over in full, which is 2.5%. They used two language models to rate all 18,796 O*NET 30.2 task statements, mapped tasks to 433 ISCO-08 unit groups, and weighted them by ILOSTAT employment in 146 countries. This information is from arXiv:2610.30752, submitted on 22 Oct 2026.

AI agents look set to change most jobs piece by piece rather than replace whole roles, which favours tools that assist workers over outright automation.

- AI hiring intensity doesn't track the size of a country's AI industry. Stanford's 2026 AI Index, drawing on Lightcast's job-postings database across dozens of countries, found the 2025 leader for AI-skill job-posting share by a wide margin was Singapore, at 4.69% of all job postings — nearly double the 2.6% share in the United States
- Stanford's 2026 AI Index, citing Lightcast's job-postings database, found that even as employer demand shifted toward newer agentic-AI skills, mentions of generative AI skills specifically in US AI job postings still grew, from 2024 to 2025, by 111%
- The information sector — telecom, media, tech services — led US corporate AI hiring in 2025. Lightcast data cited in Stanford's 2026 AI Index found AI skills required in 13.2% of the sector's job postings, up from 7.8% in 2024
