THE WEEKLY

The week in receipts

Issue of 12 September 2026

This week's facts and what changed on the site, each one still linked to its source.

ComputeEstimate

Epoch AI estimates the single largest owner of AI computing power worldwide is not a chipmaker or a cloud reseller but Google, which held, measured in H100-equivalents as of the fourth quarter of 2025, about a quarter of all global AI compute, mostly its own TPUs rather than Nvidia GPUs

Epoch AI tested three commercial AI detectors — Pangram, GPTZero, Originality.ai — pinned to their June 2026 versions. Against plain machine-generated text they catch nearly everything, but shown five samples of a specific author's writing and told to imitate the style, AI detectors missed 13% of style-imitated AI passages, versus under 1% of plain AI text

LabourPrimary

Epoch AI and Ipsos asked 469 US workers who had used AI for work in the previous seven days whose subscription they were on. In computer, engineering and science jobs 67% use a tool their employer provides — everywhere else the free tier wins: 46% of US workers using AI at work are on a free plan, against 37% given a tool by their employer

Traditional computing powers like Germany, Japan and France now play marginal roles in AI infrastructure. Epoch AI's tracking of global GPU cluster performance in May 2025 put China second at 15%, behind a United States hosting about three-quarters of the world's GPU cluster performance

What changed on the site

  1. The homepage is a third shorter on a phone

The receipts and the free brief now come first and the data follows, with the locked company cards moved to their own pages. On a phone the page went from 37 screens to 27, every chart, photo and diagram kept whole.

  2. Tap a model and its detail opens right there

On the leaderboard the selected model's numbers appeared in a panel above the table — off a phone screen entirely, so tapping a row looked like nothing had happened. The detail now opens under the row you tapped.

  3. Ten more companies have an AI exposure page

Alphabet, Amazon, Oracle, AMD, Marvell, Micron, Intel, ASML, Arista and Dell join the exposure set, each with the AI share of revenue it discloses — or the plain note that it discloses none.

  4. Both newsletters got a full visual redesign

The Daily Receipts and The Weekly Brief now open with a full masthead and a themed photo band on every section — in the clients that render them, Gmail and Apple Mail included.
