SoftBank Wired OpenAI the Last $10B of Its Follow-on on Oct 1, Taking Its Stake to $64.6B and About 13% — Three Days Later Masayoshi Son Said Superintelligence in the Wrong Hands Could Be 'Super Dangerous'

On Oct 1, 2026, SoftBank Group executed the third and final $10.0 billion tranche of the $30 billion follow-on investment in OpenAI it announced in February, after tranches on Apr 1 and Jul 1, taking its cumulative investment in OpenAI to $64.6 billion for a stake of about 13%, according to its own press release. The tranche was funded by $11.1 billion of dollar and euro high-yield bonds priced on Sept 24: $1 billion of 3.5-year notes at 8.625%, $4.5 billion of 5.5-year notes at 9.25% and $4.5 billion of 7.5-year notes at 9.75%, plus €500 million of 4-year notes at 7.125% and €500 million of 6-year notes at 8%, the largest high-yield corporate bond sale on record, ahead of Numericable's $10.9 billion in 2014, per Reuters and Bloomberg. OpenAI's round raised $122 billion at an $852 billion valuation. On Oct 4, at a public dialogue with White House science adviser Michael Kratsios on the sidelines of the Science and Technology in Society forum in Kyoto, Masayoshi Son said superintelligence in the wrong hands could be "super dangerous", that humanity no longer has the luxury of fighting itself, and repeated his forecast that AI and learning machines will generate at least 20% of world GDP, about $46 trillion, by 2040; he called for trust and cooperation between governments on frontier models. The warning came three days after the last wire, which was borrowed at coupons of up to 9.75%, and the ask was cooperation, not a pause.
